snapped the tie with his 5th goal of the season beating Talbot from the slot after

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres will miss $215 million man Clayton Kershaw in baseballs North American opener Sunday night. Nike Texans #17 Brock Osweiler White Womens Stitched NFL Elite Jersey . Theyll face pretty much the rest of the $235 million roster of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who sit atop baseballs payroll perch and the NL West. Catch the action live on TSN2, starting with Baseball Tonight: Sunday Night Countdown at 6:30pm et/3:30pm pt. Padres third baseman Chase Headley said his team has a "healthy dislike" of the Dodgers, who won the division last year after going on a 42-8 run that began with a victory in San Diego. That said, the Padres welcome the prime-time spotlight, rare for a team thats lost 91, 86 and 86 games the last three seasons and hasnt been to the playoffs since 2006. "I think itll be fun," said Headley, whose future is uncertain because he and the club failed for the second straight off-season to agree to a long-term contract. "Its just a good opportunity for the Padres. Being in this market, we dont get that opportunity a lot. Itll be exciting to be the one and only game on. Hopefully well go out and play the way we can and maybe some fans that wouldnt necessarily watch us will get to see were a pretty good team." Kershaw, who last fall won the NL Cy Young Award for the second time in three seasons, was scratched from Sunday nights start on Wednesday because of an inflamed muscle in his back. He landed on the disabled list Saturday for the first time in his career. The Dodgers will turn to left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu (1-0), who won the second of two games against the division rival Arizona Diamondbacks in Sydney. The Dodgers came home leading the NL West at 2-0. The Padres, who have a relatively modest payroll of $90 million, the highest in their history, will counter with right-hander Andrew Cashner, who was 10-9 with a 3.09 ERA last year. "Its pretty neat with us being the only game in baseball on Sunday," Cashner said. "So thats a big honour for us and our city. Were looking forward to it." The big Texan, obtained in a trade with the Chicago Cubs in January 2012, has quickly ascended to the top of San Diegos rotation. Being tapped as the opening day starter by manager Bud Black "is huge for me, just the road Ive come, the injuries Ive had, just last year, learning a lot and coming around to the player I thought I could be," Cashner said. "Its a big honour." In three starts against the Dodgers last year, Cashner lost by scores of 3-1, 2-1 and 1-0, while striking out 16 and not allowing a home run in 22 innings. "Hes got a power arm and tries to keep the ball down," said Adrian Gonzalez, who was with the Padres from 2006 until being traded to Boston after the 2010 season. "We beat him three times without a homer, so hopefully well beat him without a homer again." The Padres play in a pitchers park "and they always seem to keep coming up with more and more arms," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Cashner at the end of the year last year was filthy. Theyve got good arms, theyve got guys that play the game right and they play hard. Theyre tough because Bud always matches up with you right and left pretty good, and theyre getting more and more experience." Los Angeles season-changing, 42-8 surge in 2013 started with a win at Petco Park on June 22. The Dodgers salvaged the final two games of a four-game series. "It felt good to win those two games," catcher A.J. Ellis said. "We were definitely scuffling at that time and youre hoping that was the turn. But to go 42-8, starting with that, that was the last thing in any of our thoughts. "But it was good to see (Zack) Greinke throw the ball well, kind of kick things off and see him get healthy and in the form hes accustomed. Hanley (Ramirez) was playing; Yasiel (Puig) was up in the big leagues, so a combination of health and getting some guys hot at the right time. We knew we had the talent to do it; it was just a matter of executing and getting the job done on the field." The Padres think theyll be better this year, but already there are signs of trouble. Left fielder Carlos Quentin (sore left knee) and right-handed starter Josh Johnson (forearm) were placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday. With Quentin going down, both rookie Tommy Medica and 35-year-old Xavier Nady made the squad. Nike Broncos #6 Mark Sanchez Blue Alternate Womens Stitched NFL New Elite Jersey . Atletico Madrid also stayed perfect thanks to goals by Diego Costa in a 2-1 win against Osasuna, giving it 18 points, although Barcelona stay top with its better goal differential. Russia has spent about $51 billion to deliver the Sochi Olympics, which run Feb. 7-23, making them the most expensive games ever, even though as a winter event it hosts many fewer athletes than summer games do.Winnipeg Jets 5 New York Rangers 2 With the win the Jets are now 3-1 on the six-game road trip, as they leave the New York area they are headed for the state of Florida for the final two games. Jets season record is now 13-12-4 and their road record is 6-6-1. For the second straight game the Jets fell behind early as Mats Zuccarello opened the scoring at 2:49 of the first, the only goal of the opening period with the Rangers outshooting the Jets 11-6. The Jets defence got more involved in the offensive side of the game in period two and the Jets had a number of chances to score, including goal posts from Dustin Byfuglien and Jacob Trouba. The Jets tied the game 8:16 in with Devin Setoguchi notching his third in four games off a nice feed from Olli Jokinen. Setoguchi now has seven on the year. Chris Thorburn was the left winger on that line in the absence of Evander Kane and picked up his first point of the season on the play. Kane is day to day with a lower body injury. Less than two minutes later the Jets took the lead. John Albert, up from St. Johns, and making his NHL debut was sent in by Byfuglien and scored his first NHL goal on his first NHL shot. It was a great defensive read by Byfulien at the Jets line that started the play. 24-year-old Albert was a Jets pick in 2007 and is a third year pro. His parents, John and Cindy, were in the building for his special night. Ryan Callahan tied the game before the second period was out, scoring off a goal mouth scramble. The second period was wide open with the teams trading chances and the shots, with the totals 15-13 in favour of New York. Both teams were cautious to start the third but after the Jets killed off a penalty, the game again opened up with both Ondrej Pavelec and Cam Talbot getting tested. At 12:42 Jokinen snapped the tie with his 5th goal of the season beating Talbot from the slot after some good fore-checking by Thorburn and Setoguchi. It stayed that way until Jokinens second of the game and 6th of the season put the game away, as he again beat Talbot from the slot with a wrist shot. Michael Frolik and Jacob Trouba drew assists. Trouba earned another assist on an empty net goal by Blake Wheeler. For Wheeler the goal snapped a 14 game goalless stretch. Final shots favoured the Rangers 37-30. Individually, Pavelec has now only allowed nine goals against in his last five road games, Jokinen recorded his first three point game of the season, Thorburn notched is seventh career multi point game, Trouba his first to go along with a game-high eight blocked shots. Mark Scheifele had his four game point streak snapped but had another very good game in 16:57 of ice time, his most minutes played in the past 12 games. At 12:10, that was a season high for Thorburn, while Byfuglien again led the way at 28:38. Wheeler had seven shots on goal to lead the Jets in that category. Jokinen and Grant Clitsome were each plus three in the game. It was the second plus three game of the season for Clitsome. Albert played 8:29 on a line with James Wright and Anthony Peluso. "We managed the puck very well, were a confident group and had a lot of players engaged in the game," commented Coach Claude Noel. " We got production from a lot of people." As for Albert, "He had a few bumps but he was fine, strong positionally. His goal lifted our bench, a lot." As for Thorburn, "he was good, got involved physically. On the fore-check he wanted the puck dumped into his corner and he would go get it." Jets will have two more practice days in Florida before meeting the Panthers Thursday (TSN Jets, TSN 1290), then close out the trip in Tampa Saturday.
